From 1991 to approximately 2016, Freddie Baer worked closely with the Tiptree Motherboard (later the Otherwise Award) to design an annual collage for the award. The collage was printed on posters and t-shirts, and was one of the primary fund-raising tools for the Tiptree Award. In 2016, Freddie produced two graphics, one which was put on a notebook.
In addition, Freddie did cover art for several related projects. The anthology Flying Cups and Saucers, edited by Debbie Notkin, was the first Tiptree-related anthology. Her Smoke Rose Up from Supper was one of two cookbooks produced by the Tiptree Motherboard, both punning on Tiptree titles (Her Smoke Rose Up Forever). Neat Sheets: The Poetry of James Tiptree, Jr., edited by Jacob Weisman and produced by Tachyon Press, was a chapbook of some of Tiptree’s poetry from the 1940s-1950s. Although it was not directly connected with the Tiptree Award, we include it as part of the Tiptree-related work.
Note: Dates may be a bit confused. The Tiptree Award was awarded first in 1992, for the publishing year of 1991, and so on for the next three decades. Freddie created collages for the first 26 years of the award, through 2017 (for the publishing year 2016). In 2019, the Award was renamed “Otherwise Award“. The Othewise was not awarded for 2022 and 2023, and was re-initiated in 2024.
