Bosses: The Real Time Bandits (1981)

“Bosses: The Real Time Bandits” was Freddie’s first collage, according to “20 Questions for Freddie Baer” interview. She included it in Ecstatic Incisions (p.5).

In “20 Questions” (#3), Freddie wrote,

Despite dabbling with silk screen and offset printing as means of production, my initiation into collage and illustration didn’t happen until 1981 at an art show reception for the collages of Incite! (a San Francisco-based collage group). I realized that anyone could do collage — it was just a matter of putting the right pieces together. That night I went home and began my first collage, “Bosses: the Real Time Bandits.” I’ve been glueing paper down ever since. (Ecstatic Incisions, p.4)

The collage itself is printed in black and white, and includes two major sections — what appears to be an image of seven older white men, in ties, walking alongside a reflecting pool. Behind and above, in the background, is an array of clocks, watches, timepieces, and a few other items. One item appears to be a coin, directly above one of the parading men. In the upper right is a thumb, possibly holding one of the timepieces.

The title is a reference to “Time Bandits”, a 1981 film by Terry Gilliam.
